World Record Set in Cape Girardeau at Science Day 2008
Hundreds of kids, young and old, put Cape Girardeau, Missouri into the record books at Science Day
2008.  The residents of southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, and western Kentucky blew up 852
balloons in an hour breaking the previous record of 600 balloons.  All documents will be sent to
Guinness to verify the record and we’ll have an official record in the next few months, says Jason
Lindsey with Hooked on Science.

This is the third annual Science Day event.  Organizations hooked kids on science by performing
hands-on experiments at different booths.  Three science teachers were awarded the Steve Spangler
Science Teacher Award and four students were awarded prizes for the Science Day coloring
contest.  Several kids dressed like a scientist at Science Day and two earned prizes.  The community
teamed up to make Science Day a big success, says Lindsey.

Bottom line, Science Day shows everyone science is both fun and important.  Lindsey says you can
expect a bigger Science Day event in 2009.

Science Day Experiment
Air Takes Up Space
Air is everywhere, but since it's transparent how do we really know it’s there?  It’s an experiment that
might get you and your family “Hooked on Science.”

Ingredients
Balloon

Instructions
STEP 1: Stretch the balloon in all directions.
STEP 2: Place the open end of the balloon near your mouth
STEP 3:  Inflate the balloon by using the air in your lungs

Explanation
This experiment proves air takes up space.  Air is transparent, but we know it's there when the wind blows or by inflating a balloon.
