GATEWAY ARCH GOES DARK FOR MIGRATING BIRDS



The Gateway Arch will remain dark for the entire month of September to protect migrating birds. In September, 40% of all migratory birds fly along the Mississippi River. The lights from the Gateway Arch can disorient these birds, leading to collisions with buildings and disrupting their ability to complete long-distance migrations.

GIANT MEGAPHONE INSTALLED IN DETROIT TO AMPLIFY THE SOUND OF NATURE



Belle Isle Park, in Detroit, is home to this ridiculously oversized 10-foot wooden megaphone. Engineered by a bunch of brainiac high school kids, this crazy portal to the wild amplifies the island’s living soundtrack: the rustle of wetlands, whispers from the forest, the rhythmic flow of the Detroit River, and maybe even the distant hum of the city itself.

A RETIRED K-9 NAMED MAPLE IS HELPING SAVE HONEYBEE HIVES



Meet Maple, an English Springer Spaniel, with a ridiculously important job - sniffing out American foulbrood, or AFB, a spore-forming bacteria that's basically a supervillain for honeybee larvae. Commercial beekeepers have to manually inspect hundreds of colonies to search for AFB, which can take days as part of routine inspections. A dog like Maple, however, can sniff out multiple colonies in a much shorter period.

MEGAFLASH OF LIGHTNING ZAPS 515 MILES FROM TEXAS TO MISSOURI



Pikachu's got some 'splainin' to do! This lightning bolt just shocked the world, zapping 515 miles from Texas to Missouri in a super cool electric move. The World Meteorological Organization confirms the 515-mile-long "megaflash" of lightning in 2017 is a new world record.
